Spend time in the recording studio with Brian d'Arcy James, Kate Baldwin, Michael John LaChiusa, and more as they make some music.
Over the course of two days in January 2013, the cast, orchestra, and creative team of the off-Broadway musical Giant came together one last time to lay down tracks for their cast recording. TheaterMania was there to document the process and talk to the cast and creative team about the Giant experience, the importance of a cast album, and what it's like to create something "for the ears."
Based on the classic novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edna Ferber, Giant is an American musical that spans generations in an epic chronicle of a state that's like no place else on earth: Texas. A powerful cattleman, his new East Coast bride, and their family and friends — not to mention their enemies — embrace and confront the joys and sorrows that loom as large as the state they call home, all amid a turbulent culture of greed, bigotry, and money.
With a book by Sybille Pearson (the Tony Award-nominated author of Baby), music and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Michael John LaChiusa (The Wild Party), and direction by Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Next to Normal), Giant ran in New York at the Public Theater from November 15 to December 16, 2012, and featured a company of 22 actors and a 17-piece orchestra.
